Fundraising updates:
Skylines 2009
With the generous support of our sponsors and guests, 265,000yen was raised and donated equally to the two nonprofit nongovernmental organizations the PSC team selected in Winter 2008. Our theme for the second SKYLINES party was children and women’s health. We expect that party participants and sponsors have recognized the significant work of these nonprofits and hope they will continue to support them.

Funds raised from SKYLINES 2008 went to:
Tokyo Shure/Shure University
Created in the 1980’s when the number of school refusing youth was increasing, Tokyo Shure is Japan’s first alternative education center, ie “free school”. They work with Futoko, Hikikomori and other youth groups. At Shure, youth who left school or society search for who they are and how to live through research and art projects. Their background and personalities are diverse, so they do not feel they fit into the uniform Japanese education system. Students design their own education programs at Shure University. This type of higher education is quite unique not only in Japan but also elsewhere. Shure University has developed partnerships with other innovative schools around the world and as part of their international networking they run an annual film festival.

Kalakasan Migrant Women’s Empowerment Center
The word “Kalakasan” comes from the Tagalog word meaning “strength.” Living in Japan, migrant women are subject to all forms of discrimination and abusive violence because they are 1) women, and 2) non-Japanese. KALAKASAN, through its programs and support systems for migrant women and their children, aims to facilitate their empowerment so that they might reclaim their inner strength. KALAKASAN responds comprehensively to women and children in crisis, particularly those bearing complex problems. Besides crisis intervention services, they provide follow-up programs focusing on healing and self-reliance. These programs include home visitation, workshops and seminars for traumatized victims and survivors of violence. In addition, for children they run multi-cultural courses, and activities to promote building relationships through social interaction. KALAKASAN also participates in advocacy activities to bring about social change and respect for human rights.
